Mali adopted their flag in 1961 shortly after the dissolution of the Mali Federation. The gold stands for mineral wealth and purity, the green stands for the fertile land. And the red stands for the blood shed in the country's struggle for independence from the French.

The flag has a white strip on the side with two metal eyelets.
